Quintino Sella - Via Nazionale

(English) Plaque devoted to Quintino Sella, minister of Finances during the Reign of Italy. Born in the province of Biella in 1827, was an hydraulic engineer, specialized in mineralogy. In 1860 he began his activities in politics as deputy in the new italian parliament, where he acted for balancing of the Reign accounts, and operated to complete the Italy unification with the Take of Rome, in 1870.

To pursuit the break even, reached in 1876, he followed a strictly politic made of privatizations, cubacks and new taxes, the most notorious, the "grist tax".

He was also an alpinist enthusiast, so many mountain huts are named in is honour.

Maybe today Quintino Sella, and the grist tax are forgotten for mosts.
But Quintino Sella's desk, in the latest years, has found a small notoriety. Its story starts in July 2001, when the new Minister Giulio Tremonti declared that he will pursuit the break even with measures like privatiziations. With an hyperbole he said that the only thing of italian state that he will not sell was the "Quintino Sella's desk" ( La Scrivania di Quintino Sella - Corriere della Sera, 12 July 2001 ). Also, in the interview with italian main newsbreak, he also said furher that if will not achieve the break even in 2003, he will "ceases to occupy the notorious desk", or rather, he will resign.

Later, in 2005, Soru, Region of Sardinia president, for a question about found transfers from central administration to the region that he administrate, declared at newspapers (with another hyperbole), that if the question will not resolved (and the founds transferred) he will proceed even for a foreclosure on Minister of Finances, Sella's desk included.

Now, in 2008, Tremonti, Soru, and, obiovously, Quintino Sella's desk, are all at the same place.

The plaque, placed in 1886, two years after Quintino Sella death, is placed in Via Nazionale 230, and it's realized in the typical style of the plaques placed by the new rome administration during the 1870s and the 1880s:letter engraveds in black on a plate of white marble, with a frame a grey marble.
The plaque is not well preserved, blackened due the smog.

Not distant from here, in Minister of Finance railing on Via Cernaia, there is small monument devoted to Sella.

Here a translation of the plaque inscription:

(Italian) plaque in memory of Quintino Sella, Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Italy. Born in the province of Biella in 1827, was a hydraulic engineer specialized in mineralogy. In 1860 he began his political activity as a deputy in the new Italian parliament. Here he strove to achieve a balanced budget, and to complete the Italian unification with the taking of Rome in 1870.
To achieve a balanced budget, achieved in 1876, pursued a strict financial policy of privatizations, cuts and new taxes, such as the notorious "tax on the ground."
was also fond of mountaineering, and today many shelters are named in his honor.

Maybe today Quintino Sella, and the tax on flour, are the most forgotten. But his desk has been in recent years a small reputation. This story begins in July 2001 when the new finance minister, Giulio Tremonti, said that he would work for a balanced budget with measures such as privatization. With hyperbole said that the only property state that did not sell was the "desk Quintino Sella ( The Bureau of Quintino Sella - Corriere della Sera, July 12, 2001 ). Furthermore, in an interview with the main Italian news added that if he had not reached break even in 2003, he "would leave that desk," or, he would resign.
Later, in 2005, Soru, President of Sardinia, on an issue of transfer of funds from the central to the region administered by him, told journalists (other hyperbole) that if the dispute were not resolved (and funds transferred) would require the seizure of the Ministry of Finance, Bureau of Sella included.
Today, in 2008, Tremonti, Soru, and, of course, Sella's desk, are all still the same place.

The plaque, placed in 1886, two years after the death of Sella is located in Via Nazionale 230, and is made with the typical style of the plaque by the new administration Capitoline between 70s and 80s of the nineteenth : black letters on a slab of white marble, with a border of gray marble. The plaque is not well preserved, gray-smog.

Not far from here, at the gates of the Minster of Finance in Via Cernaia, there is a small monument dedicated to Sella.
